US4-200 Water Filtration System
Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace the filters?

We recommend changing the 1 micron carbon block filter once per year. The KDF/GAC unit is warranted to last for 3 years. The most difficult contaminants to remove are THM's and VOC's. These substances can't be detected using the senses. They are also the first things the filter will lose its ability to remove. For this reason, it is recommended that the filters be replaced on a periodic basis.

Which replacement filters do I use and how much are they?

The standard replacement filters are US4-I and Pb1. They are $199 and $45 respectively. The Doulton Ultracarb is an option, and it sells for $59.

What is the difference between the US4-200 and a Reverse Osmosis System?

A reverse osmosis system is a process of forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane, which separates the contaminants from the pure water. Only the purest water gets through. The difference in the water is that the RO system removes 95% of the total dissolved solids (TDS) in the water. While there are things that make up TDS that are harmful, (lead, arsenic, etc) most of the time TDS is comprised of harmless minerals. So any RO system removes most all of the minerals from water in addition to any harmful TDS makeup.

The US4-200 system uses the best combination of filters to remove the Chlorine, taste, and odor of your water as well as the harmful contaminants that might be found in municipal water such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and lead. The unit is smaller than any RO system because it does not require a storage tank. It is also more economical to own and maintain.

Why did Dr. Andrew Weil recommend this product in his NY Times # 1 Best-seller, 8 Weeks to Optimum Health?

Dr. Weil recommends under sink filtration that uses KDF and 1 micron absolute carbon block filtration because he feels it is the best system to use for municipal (chlorinated) water treatment. He went on to say, "Under sink units of this type are available for under $500 and are easy to maintain." Dr. Weil also printed our 800 number in the back of the book.

These fittings don't have wrench connections, will they really hold water?

Absolutely! John Guest quick-connect fittings are the very best available. The fittings connect and disconnect without tools and they don't leak. They are compatible with copper pr plastic tubing. These fittings are also free of any harmful metals, unlike most compression fittings made from brass and lead. See the enclosed brochure on the fittings for all the details on how to use them.

My Filter is Brand New and the water looks cloudy from the tap. Why?

What's happening is dissolved oxygen is being added to the water by the new filters. It is completely harmless to you. If you draw a glass of water and watch it for a minute, the bubbles will clear, from the bottom up. After a minute the water is completely clear. Nothing has settled to the bottom or collected at the top.

How does oxygen get into the water?

When the filter is new (not wet) all of the pores in the carbon are full of oxygen. Most of the oxygen is displaced immediately when the filters are put into service. However, some pockets can remain and it may take 5-7 days for the saturation process to be complete. After that the water will be clear when drawn.
